FIAS Celebrates World Environment Day 2025
On June 5, the International SAMBO Federation joins the global community in observing World Environment Day – a vital reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the planet we all call home.
This year’s theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, highlights a growing environmental emergency. Each year, the world produces over 400 million tonnes of plastic, yet less than 10% of it is recycled. An estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the natural environment annually, threatening ecosystems, biodiversity, and human health. Microplastic particles have been found in the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe – with the average person now consuming over 50,000 plastic particles every year. It’s a reality we can no longer ignore.
Led by the United Nations Environment Program and hosted by South Korea in 2025, World Environment Day urges us all to take action: refuse single-use plastics, reduce unnecessary consumption, reuse wherever possible, recycle properly, and rethink how plastic fits into our lives. The tools and knowledge exist – the time for implementation is now.
Just weeks ago, on May 22, FIAS also joined in celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity under the theme “Be part of the plan.” This message supports the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to restore ecosystems, protect nature, and halt biodiversity loss by 2030.
As a committed signatory of the Sports for Nature Framework, FIAS believes that sport has both the power and the responsibility to contribute to environmental protection. Our work includes reducing ecological risks, restoring natural systems, and encouraging the global SAMBO community – athletes, coaches, fans, and federations – to be part of the solution.
Today, we also proudly support the “It’s in our nature” campaign. Through collective action and everyday choices, we can build a healthier future – not just for sport, but for generations to come.
Your Actions Matter:
Reduce plastic use. Protect nature. Share knowledge.
Together, we are part of the plan.
