International SAMBO Tournament in Lüneburg Brings Together Athletes from Eight Countries

On June 7, 2025, the German city of Lüneburg hosted the 23rd edition of the Lüneburger SAMBO Cup, a major international tournament that has become a staple of the local sports calendar. The event welcomed around 175 athletes from eight countries, ranging from young debutants to seasoned veterans.

Competitors came from Uzbekistan, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Ireland, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Moldova, and Germany. According to German team coach Andrey Herzen, the tournament offered a true celebration of SAMBO – a day filled with intense matches, triumphant moments, and the emotional first steps of newcomers to the sport.

Participants noted the warm and friendly atmosphere created by tournament organizer Oleg Derkach, who once again upheld tradition by treating all guests and athletes to authentic Uzbek plov at the end of the event – a beloved ritual that brings everyone together.

“The Lüneburger Cup once again proves that SAMBO is gaining ground in Germany. Each year, more athletes and clubs take part, a clear sign of the sport’s growing popularity both within the country and on the international stage,” said Andrey Herzen.

He also emphasized that the tournament was not only a chance to determine the strongest competitors but also an opportunity for all participants to gain valuable experience, build connections, and find fresh motivation for future training.
