SAMBO makes its debut in the African Games program in Ghana
SAMBO competitions will be held for the first time in the African Games program. The historic debut will take place on March 19 at the GCB Legon Hall in the capital of Ghana, Accra. SAMBO was included in the Games program among 29 other sports.
According to the organizing committee of the 13th African Games, about 5,000 athletes and coaches representing 54 countries of the continent will take part in the multi-sport competitions. Sambists will compete for medals in three disciplines: Sport SAMBO among men, Sport SAMBO among women and Combat SAMBO among men. A total of 6 sets of medals will be played out – 2 in each discipline:
Sport SAMBO (men): 58 kg, 79 kg
Sport SAMBO (women): 59 kg, 65 kg
Combat SAMBO (men): 64 kg, 79 kg
Athletes from 11 African countries will take part in the SAMBO tournament: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Togo.
“We have been working towards this for a very long time and worked hard to include SAMBO in the program of the African Games. This is a huge breakthrough for SAMBO, because for the first time in history, African sambists will take part in the largest multi-sport competitions on the continent,” said Dalil Skalli, president of the African Sambo Confederation.
