23rd International SAMBO Tournament in Lüneburg Sets Participation Record

The German city of Lüneburg hosted the 23rd International SAMBO Tournament, drawing more than 200 athletes – from the youngest competitors to seasoned veterans. The event became one of the largest in the tournament's history in terms of participation.

Athletes from 18 German clubs took to the mat, joined by representatives from 12 countries: England, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Latvia, Finland, Hungary, Romania, and Syria.

“This wonderful sporting event was held at a high organizational and technical level, in an atmosphere of friendship, respect, and mutual understanding,” said Oleg Derkach, chief referee and one of the tournament's lead organizers.

Derkach extended his appreciation to all referees who worked throughout the competition. Despite the large number of participants and bouts, he noted, the officiating panel demonstrated outstanding professionalism, impartiality, and excellent coordination.

The team standings were determined as follows:

1. SAMBO Combat Cobra

2. SAMBO Combat Gryphon

3. BKSV Hamburg

The tournament closed with what has become a cherished tradition: Oleg Derkach prepared authentic Uzbek plov for all participants – a gesture that has come to symbolize the hospitality, friendship, and unity of the SAMBO community.

“The International Tournament in Lüneburg once again proved that SAMBO brings together people of different nations and generations, strengthening friendship, mutual respect, and international sporting cooperation,” he said.
