World Sambo Championship among Masters in Greece: results of the second day of competition

Today, masters between the ages of 50 to 65 and older showed their skills on Greek carpet. Athletes from Russia, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, USA, Lithuania, Georgia and Germany added their gold medals to the score of their countries. In the end the medals of the World Sambo Championship among Masters won athletes from 15 countries. Merabi Iliadis, President of the Hellenic Sambo Federation, became the main hero of organization while hosting this tournament. “For amateurs and professionals the sambo tournament among masters firstly is a festival. I’m happy that we could avoid injuring, and the most important thing – all the participants were content. It was appealing to see some sambo wrestlers rejoicing their own winning and worrying about their loss just like children. We’ve done all depending from us in terms of organization of this tournament. To my mind, we’ve done it successfully”, concluded the results of passed competition Merabi Iliadis.

“The victory of our Greek athlete became a big event for us. In challenging final he beat the participant from Russia which is the Motherland of sambo. Moreover, the pupil of our champion is 2-times junior world champion. Now he can make boast of his gold medal too.”

“As for the quality of refereeing of this championship, it was high-level work. Almost there were no uncertainties which could lead to negative reaction from teams’ reps and audience. Also we barely used viewing videos of disputed moments. All these facts are showing us the quality of work performed by referees”, the chief referee of the competition, Boris Sova, comments the work of referees team. “Refereeing of the masters’ tournament has its own features. Referees are totally concentrated when athletes apply submission hold and while wrestle pins. Our aim is to anticipate and avoid situations which are followed by injuring.”

The next World Sambo Championship among Masters will be hosted by Israel. Yuri Trufanov, Deputy Chairman of the FIAS Commission of Masters, explains why exactly Israel will host the next World Sambo Championship among Masters: “Israel is a hospitable country, full of tourists and is a land of four religions. Excellent weather will wait for visitors. A visa free regime is provided for representatives of many teams. And we have to broaden boundaries of geography of our tournaments; additionally it will push the development of sambo up in this country.”
