Merab Dvalishvili became the main star of the US Open Sambo Championships in Texas

The US Open Sambo Championships took place in Denton, Texas, on June 22. Medals were awarded in Sport and Combat SAMBO competitions, and about 100 athletes, representing not only various regions of the country, but also other countries, took part in the tournament.

“The main celebrity of the last championship, of course, was Merab Dvalishvili. A silver medalist of the World SAMBO Championships and a UFC star, he set a high level for the competition, thanks to which all other athletes tried to express themselves to the fullest. This is important for us, because the past championship became a qualifying tournament for the formation of a national team for the upcoming competitions of the FIAS calendar: the Pan American Championship and the World Sambo Championships,” said Mikhail Kozitsky, 1st Vice President of the US National Sambo Federation USA SAMBO Inc.

He also expressed the opinion that the traditionally open format of the national championship allows American athletes to feel competition from representatives of other national SAMBO schools, which has a positive effect on their motivation and competitive preparation.

Merab Dvalishvili, in turn, briefly but very clearly shared his impressions of the last tournament on his social networks:

“Hungry for competition. Took a short-notice opportunity and competed in Texas. Took home GOLD for the U.S. National Combat Sambo Tournament,” Dvalishvili wrote on the social network.

Let us remind you that Dvalishvili took part in the World Sambo Championships, which was held in 2019 in the Republic of Korea. Then he was able to win the silver medal of the tournament. Whether he will try to improve his achievement at the World Championships in Kazakhstan will become known in November.
