Ivan Doktorov Memorial International SAMBO Tournament Draws Record Number of Participants

On June 28, the “Sofia” Hall in Borisova Garden became a vibrant arena of youth energy and SAMBO spirit. For the third year in a row, the Bulgarian SAMBO Association (BSA) hosted the Ivan Doktorov Memorial International SAMBO Tournament for cadets.

A Tournament Without Borders: 10 Countries on the Mat

Dedicated to the memory of Bulgarian SAMBO figure Ivan Doktorov, this year’s edition brought together more than 150 young athletes from 10 countries. Cadets from North Macedonia, Greece, Moldova, Belgium, France, Ukraine, Cyprus, Germany, Romania, and Bulgaria competed in the event.

“Sofia Hall was filled with sporting excitement, youthful energy, and genuine friendship—the kind of atmosphere Ivan Doktorov himself would have cherished,” noted the tournament organizers.

Honored Guests and International Presence

The tournament welcomed sports delegations from various countries and renowned figures in the SAMBO community. In his opening remarks, BSA President Dimitar Dimitrov paid tribute to Ivan Doktorov’s contributions to the development of SAMBO, emphasizing that sport should be guided by integrity, moral values, and inner drive – all qualities embodied by Doktorov.

Representatives from the municipality of Ihtiman also honored the memory of their celebrated fellow citizen.

Remembering a Man of Honor

The tournament bears the name of Ivan Doktorov – Honored Master of Sport, SAMBO coach, and honorary citizen of Panagyurishte and Ihtiman. According to the tournament organizing committee, Doktorov was one of the founding members of the BSA and is remembered as a man of duty, principle, and deep dedication to his work. His philosophy – “sport as a school of virtue” – continues to inspire new generations of athletes.

Awards, Recognition, and Special Cups

In addition to medals for the winners and runners-up, special awards were presented during the tournament.

One of the highlights was the performance of the “SOP – Sport, SAMBO for Development” club, led by Emil Neshev. His athletes—children and youth from underprivileged backgrounds—earned well-deserved medals and warm applause from the audience.

The “Ivan Doktorov” technical excellence trophies were awarded to a young SAMBO athlete from Ukraine and a talented competitor from France.

Masterclass with Dimitar Dimitrov

On the following day, June 29, Dimitar Dimitrov conducted a masterclass at the CSKA – Sofia training hall. Participants included athletes from all countries represented at the tournament.

“It was a high-energy session focused on experience sharing, mutual respect, and skill development,” Dimitrov emphasized.

Excellent Conditions and Sporting Atmosphere

The CSKA – Sofia hall provided outstanding facilities, creating an environment worthy of a high-level event. Participants and guests alike praised the warm welcome and smooth organization.

The tournament concluded with a group photo session: smiling faces, national flags, souvenirs, and images that captured the spirit of international sports friendship.
