“SAMBO Marches Forward!”: How One Couple from Guanajuato is Building a Sporting Legacy in Mexican Style
In the very heart of Mexico, within the vibrant and colorful state of Guanajuato, a story of profound dedication to sport is unfolding. Meet Julio Alberto Espinoza and his wife Nancy Hernández – two athletes whose names are already etched into the history of Pan American SAMBO. Together, they form a sporting dynasty with an ambitious goal: to transform SAMBO into a mainstream discipline across their homeland.
Today, their primary arena isn't a stadium – it's the schoolyards and community gyms of Mexico. The Espinozas, together with other Mexican sambists, have taken on the vital role of educators, committed to cultivating the next generation of champions from the ground up. As part of a major initiative to popularize SAMBO, they regularly host engaging masterclasses for beginners, offering everyone a chance to take their first steps onto the mat.

A cornerstone of their mission is bringing the sport directly to young audiences through demonstrations in elementary and middle schools. When Nancy and Julio step onto an improvised mat, surrounded by the eager eyes of Mexican boys and girls, they do more than just showcase throws and holds. They bring to life the philosophy embedded in SAMBO: the values of courage, respect, and discipline.

“Training with children and young people isn't just our job – it's our way of investing in the future,” says Julio Espinoza. “Today, we're teaching them the fundamentals of SAMBO. Tomorrow, they'll be the ones defending Mexico's colors on the international stage.”

Their passion is infectious. What began as a local project in their home state has now spread far beyond Guanajuato's borders thanks to the national SAMBO federation. New regions are steadily joining the movement, inspired by a coaching duo that knows how to spark a love for the sport and instill the drive to train hard.

So, what's the motto that unites everyone touched by this wave of enthusiasm? The answer is as simple and energetic as Mexico itself. From Guanajuato to the country's farthest corners, a rallying cry echoes, picked up by young athletes wherever they train:
