ECCAS Open International SAMBO Tournament to Be Held in Cameroon
The capital of Cameroon, Yaoundé, will for the second time host the ECCAS Open International SAMBO Tournament (Economic Community of Central African States). On September 27, the strongest athletes from across the region will compete for medals in both Sport SAMBO and Combat SAMBO.
The tournament is organized by the Cameroonian SAMBO Federation with the support of the International SAMBO Federation (FIAS). The competition will take place at the Mfandena Omnisport Gymnasium, a venue already well known to SAMBO athletes from previous events.
This year, participants will compete in the following weight categories:
Sport SAMBO (Men): 58 kg, 64 kg, 71 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, +98 kg
Sport SAMBO (Women): 59 kg, 65 kg, 72 kg
Combat SAMBO (Men): 58 kg, 64 kg, 71 kg, 88 kg, 98 kg, +98 kg
The inaugural ECCAS Tournament, held in Cameroon in 2024, drew tremendous interest with packed stands in Yaoundé. At the time, François Mbassi, President of the Cameroonian SAMBO Federation, emphasized that the competition should become an annual event and play a key role in the sport’s growth in Africa.
“We have proven that we are capable of hosting high-level tournaments. I am confident that this new edition will be another step toward establishing SAMBO as a major sport in Africa – and as the second most popular sport in Cameroon after football,” said Mbassi.
The ECCAS Open International SAMBO Tournament is not only a chance for African athletes to gain valuable international experience, but also an important milestone in strengthening the presence of SAMBO across the continent.
Full details are available in the official regulations published in the FIAS calendar.
