Latvia Hosts Open SAMBO Championship with Historic Team Tournament

On March 8, Riga welcomed nearly 100 athletes from Latvia and Lithuania for the Open Latvia SAMBO and Combat SAMBO Championship. Competitors represented clubs from both countries and took to the mats across three age divisions: cadets, juniors, and seniors.

The event carried significant weight on the national sports calendar, serving as the primary qualification stage for the upcoming European SAMBO Championships. Top finishers earned the right to represent Latvia on the international stage as part of the national team.

Alongside the individual competition, the championship featured a landmark moment for Latvian SAMBO: the country's first-ever youth team tournament. Teams of six athletes competed in a head-to-head format, which brought an added sense of collective spirit to the day's proceedings.

Four teams contested the under-13 category, while three teams competed for medals and an honorary cup in the under-15 division.

The organizers noted that hybrid events of this kind play a direct role in growing SAMBO's popularity across Latvia. Team competitions help forge stronger ties between clubs and provide young athletes with experience that prepares them for the demands of major international tournaments.
