Spanish Gijón Will Host 2019 European SAMBO Championships

The 2019 European SAMBO Championships will take place on May 17-19 in Spanish Gijón. This was stated by President of the European and the All-Russian SAMBO Federations Sergey Eliseev, the TASS news agency reported.

‘The venue for the European Championships is Gijón, and not coincidentally so - 20 years ago the city hosted the World SAMBO Championships,’ explained Eliseev. ‘There’s a fine SAMBO school in Gijón, and they uphold the traditions of our sport there. Preparations for the championships are in full swing, and we’ve approved the exposure draft of the tournament at the European Championships in Athens.’

According to Sergei Eliseev, it was the SAMBO Federation of Spain that came up with the proposal to hold the next European Championships.

‘The inviting country was supported by the National Olympic Committee of Spain. The organizing committee of the tournament offered excellent infrastructure. In particular, a finely suitable arena is allocated for the tournament, with a hotel for the accommodation of the athletes and guests of the tournament within walking distance – so everything is thought out and convenient,’ said Eliseev.
