Honduras Hosts Fifth National SAMBO Championship Named After Jovany Varela

The Honduran Olympic Village in Tegucigalpa served as the venue for the fifth National SAMBO Championship “Master Jovany Varela”. The competition, held on March 8, drew more than 100 athletes from cities across the country.

The tournament was marked by fierce competition, with its primary goal being the selection of athletes for the national team ahead of upcoming international events. The championship program covered both Sport SAMBO and Combat SAMBO, with events held for men and women across multiple age categories.

“The broad range of disciplines allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of athletes' technical and competitive levels on a national scale,” the Honduran SAMBO Federation stated.

Ubaldo Zavala, President of the Honduran Olympic Committee, attended the event as an honored guest. In his opening remarks, he reaffirmed his organization's commitment to supporting the growth and development of SAMBO in the country.

“The tournament has firmly cemented its status as the premier national event in the discipline. It remains a key platform for identifying young talent, raising athletic standards, and promoting Honduran SAMBO on the international stage,” the national SAMBO federation said.
