A second gold for Costa Rica in the history of the Pan American Championships: Reina Córdoba Calderón - a mother and phys ed teacher in everyday life

The Costa Rican performed flawlessly in the final of the 56 kg weight class against Lina Barbosa of Colombia - she dominated in clinches throughout the fight, combined and created close calls and made a lot of throws to win a well-earned victory. It wasn't just a win, but also a historic gold medal for Costa Rico, the second one in the history of SAMBO in this country.

Read a short interview with Reina Córdoba Calderón here:
"This is a very important medal, not only for me, but for our country. We started developing SAMBO in Costa Rica quite recently, just 2 years ago, so of course this medal is a real joy and means a lot to us. In principle, we train in order to compete and win medals. Right? So, the gold medal today means we're doing everything right, and that's great.
You know, I just missed reaching the podium at the World Championships in Morocco. I lost my "bronze" fight and came in fifth. It was really frustrating, and today I'm very happy that I finally won a medal.
What do I do besides sports? You know, outside of training, I don't have enough time for anything special except sports. First of all, I'm a mother. Second, I work as a phys ed teacher. So I'm occupied with my son (he turns 3 in October), I work and I train.
By the way, I'm dedicating this win and my gold medal to my son. First, of course, I'll call my family, my mother and brothers, because I want to share the joy of this victory with them."
