Netherlands in the Spotlight: 33rd DSI Dutch Open SAMBO Held in Dalfsen

The Dutch town of Dalfsen played host to the 33rd DSI Dutch Open SAMBO on March 7-8, bringing together competitors from across the globe for one of the most enduring international SAMBO events on the European calendar. Athletes of all ages took to the mat – from the youngest kids' divisions all the way through to the masters category.

The standout innovation this year was the introduction of prize money in the senior Sport and Combat SAMBO divisions, awarded in the most competitive weight categories with more than eight participants. It marks a significant step forward in the tournament's evolution.

“The introduction of prize money reflects the level of competitiveness and professionalism that the Dutch Open has achieved. We're seeing steady growth in participation year after year, and the quality of SAMBO at this tournament keeps getting better,” said Frederik Jan Ningbers, General Secretary of the Dutch SAMBO Federation.

For many national teams, Dalfsen also served as a key preparation event ahead of the season's major continental competitions: the European Youth and Junior Championships in Serbia and the Senior European Championships in Georgia.

According to the organizing committee, the competitive standard continues to rise with each edition, while the tournament's defining character remains unchanged – welcoming, friendly, and inclusive. Teams and athletes from across the world come to Dalfsen not only to compete, but to share their passion for SAMBO. It was also encouraging to see record numbers of spectators in attendance, reflecting the growing interest in the sport throughout the Netherlands.

It was particularly fitting that the second day of the tournament was held on March 8 – International Women's Day. Frederik Jan Ningbers saw the occasion as a natural opportunity to highlight the remarkable growth of women's SAMBO: “This year we saw more female athletes on the mat than ever before. It's truly inspiring and shows that SAMBO is becoming a sport for everyone.”

Equally encouraging was the emergence of a new generation of young sambists already pushing for a place among the very best. The organizing committee regards this as clear evidence that both the quality and the reach of the sport continue to expand.

“We're proud to see the Dutch Open grow year after year, and we can't wait to welcome even more athletes, teams, and nations to future editions,” Ningbers added.
