The First Open Finnish SAMBO Championships Held in Helsinki

A landmark event took place in the Finnish capital on May 3 – the first ever Open SAMBO Championships of Finland, organized by the Finnish SAMBO Federation.

“The tournament was held in a friendly and focused atmosphere, bringing together 32 participants aged from 7 to 50. Athletes represented four Finnish clubs from different regions of the country, clearly demonstrating the growing interest in SAMBO in Finland,” said Anatoly Skippari, President of the Finnish SAMBO Federation.

A special moment of the opening ceremony was the appearance of honorary guest Alexander Rannikh, World SAMBO Champion. In the 1970s, he conducted the first SAMBO demonstrations and seminars on Finnish soil.

“His presence served as a symbolic link between the history of SAMBO and its current stage of development in the country,” Skippari added.

The tournament was organized by the Sambo2000 club, led by Anatoly Smolyanov. According to the tournament organizing committee, the club has established itself over the past two decades as a strong sports base and a center for the development of SAMBO in Finland. Officiating at the championships was handled by Heikki Haapa-Aho from the Haka club – a multiple medalist of European and World Championships.

“The championships marked an important step in the development of SAMBO in the region and laid the groundwork for forming a national team. Based on the athletes’ performances, the Finnish federation plans to select five competitors who will represent the country at international tournaments under the auspices of FIAS,” Skippari concluded.
