National SAMBO Championship in Aguascalientes: A Step Toward Mexico’s National Team

The Mexican SAMBO Championship was held on April 25-26 in the state of Aguascalientes. The tournament served as a key qualifying event for the formation of the national team. It was organized by the SAMBO and Combat SAMBO Association of the State of Aguascalientes in cooperation with the Mexican Federation of SAMBO Clubs, Coaches and Athletes (FEMECEAS).

Medals were contested in several disciplines: Sport SAMBO, Combat SAMBO, Beach SAMBO, as well as Cadet Combat SAMBO. Each discipline included both men’s and women’s categories. Winners and medalists earned a chance to join the national team that will represent Mexico at the upcoming Pan American Championships and other FIAS international competitions.

The tournament brought together athletes from across the country: Guanajuato, Querétaro, Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Coahuila, Guerrero, Tampico, Baja California, Aguascalientes, as well as university teams from UNAM and IPN.

In addition to the sports competition, the event included a FEMECEAS congress session. During the meeting, official accreditations were awarded to several regional associations and their representatives. It was also announced that the presence of SAMBO in the country will soon expand, with three more states – Oaxaca, Monterrey and Nayarit – planning to join the federation.

FEMECEAS President Ángel Arteaga del Ángel, Vice President Franco Javier Bautista Ríos, and Head of SAMBO in Aguascalientes Professor Efredith Ibáñez Ibáñez expressed confidence that the tournament was not only a sporting event but also a testament to the rapid development of SAMBO in Mexico.

“Thanks to the coordinated work of the federation and the active engagement of regional structures, SAMBO is strengthening its position in the country and becoming increasingly accessible to athletes of all ages and skill levels,” the tournament’s organizing committee stated.
