Breaking Barriers: SAMBO and Women’s Leadership

In an era where sports bridge cultures and empower individuals, Sonja Menjour, a dedicated SAMBO coach and representative of the "Fédération Royale Marocaine de SAMBO et Tai Jitsu", is forging an inspiring path. Her recent involvement in a leadership course organized by the International World Games Association (IWGA) – a platform supported by FIAS – underscores the expanding role of women in sports governance and highlights the untapped potential of SAMBO to inspire communities globally.
Building Bridges Through Shared Ambition
The course, attended by 22 women from various national and international sports federations, was a melting pot of ideas and aspirations. For Menjour, it was a prime opportunity to showcase the dynamic appeal of SAMBO. "Many were curious – some had never seen SAMBO in action," she shared, describing how she vividly presented the sport’s techniques with photos, sparking engaging discussions. Her dual role as a FIAS advocate and Moroccan federation representative emphasized SAMBO's global reach and the importance of cross-border collaboration.
A pivotal aspect of the experience was the guidance of instructor Gabriela Müller, whose infectious energy and advocacy for women's leadership left a lasting impression. "Gabriela didn’t just teach – she ignited a fire," Menjour remarked. The sessions reinforced her resolve to elevate women's roles in sports governance, a mission she's championed for over a decade as both a journalist and coach.
Embracing Innovation: AI and the Future of Sport
A revelation for Menjour was the course’s exploration of artificial intelligence in sports. Initially unfamiliar with AI’s applications, she now acknowledges its transformative potential. "Understanding AI isn’t optional anymore – it’s essential," she noted, having since attended advanced AI training alongside 100 women from various sporting disciplines. This forward-thinking approach aligns with her belief that SAMBO’s growth hinges on blending tradition with innovation.
From Orphanages to the Podium: A Legacy of Impact
Menjour's commitment extends beyond theoretical discussions. Six years ago, she founded the "Association Caritaire de SAMBO et Tai-Jitsu", a charitable initiative training girls aged 10-18 from a local orphanage. What began as a modest project has blossomed into a national success story: at Morocco’s recent National SAMBO Championships, 40 of her students claimed 5 gold, 8 silver, and 15 bronze medals. "These girls have redefined resilience," she stated, her pride evident.
Inspired by the leadership course, Menjour is expanding her efforts to include boys and adults, aspiring to democratize SAMBO’s reach. The association has already celebrated senior and junior championship medals, including two bronzes, proving that talent flourishes when met with opportunity. "Many lack resources, not determination," she emphasized, outlining her plans to secure funding for aspiring athletes.
A Vision for Global Growth
Looking to the future, Menjour views these courses as vital platforms to elevate SAMBO's profile. "It’s an honour to represent our sport on such stages," she reflected on the diploma she earned – a testament to her relentless drive.
"Platforms like these empower us to break barriers, together," Sonja affirmed. As SAMBO gains global momentum, women stand as a testament to the power of passion, innovation, and inclusive leadership – a beacon for the next generation of athletes and advocates.
