Juan CONTRERAS: “My grandfather inspires me to keep moving forward”
At the Pan American SAMBO Championships in Ecuador, Colombia’s Juan Contreras once again proved his dominance – climbing to the top step of the continental podium for the third time by winning gold in the Combat SAMBO -79 kg weight category. In an exclusive interview, Juan shared his emotions, preparation, and the personal meaning behind the tattoo bearing his grandfather’s name.
Not a Priority – But Still Gold
“There are so many mixed emotions in my head,” Juan admitted right after his win. “My main goal this year is the World Combat Games in Chengdu, China. Initially, the Pan American Championships weren’t even on my priority list, but now I’ve reached the final three times in five tournaments – and claimed a third gold medal. I dedicate this victory to the memory of my maternal grandmother, my girlfriend, and of course, my grandfather.”
Juan also expressed gratitude to his physical conditioning coach, Carlos Colorado, and the President of the Colombian SAMBO Federation, Carlos López, for their constant support.
Dreaming of a World Championship Medal
“I want to train at the highest elite level and one day win a World Championship medal in SAMBO,” Juan said. “I’ve achieved a lot in the Pan American region, but stepping onto the world podium is the next step. I’m 29 now, and I feel that this is the right moment to chase that dream.”
Moments in the Match – Minutes of Uncertainty
According to Juan, the final match lasted only a couple of minutes – but it left a lasting impression.
“It was a very fast fight. I was in a right-handed stance, and my opponent kept going for my lead leg. I landed a clean strike during one of his entries and knocked him down. The match paused as the medical team checked on him, and he was ultimately withdrawn due to a cut. I was genuinely concerned for him – he’s an elite athlete, competing and preparing at the highest level around the world, just like me.”
The Story Behind ‘Don Silva’
Juan has many tattoos, but one across his chest holds special meaning. After each victory, he proudly reveals it.
“This isn’t just a phrase – it’s the name ‘Don Silva,’” he explained. “That’s what everyone in our neighborhood called my grandfather, Víctor Manuel Silva Pérez. It was a name spoken with deep respect. I chose to get it tattooed to keep him close and to let his memory inspire me to keep moving forward.”
Juan expressed confidence that his grandfather's support will help him perform well at the World Games in China in August.
