National SAMBO Championships Held in Mauritius

The Mauritius SAMBO Championships were held in the city of Centre de Flacq. The event, held at the Parsad Balkissoon Sports Complex, was attended by 24 sambists from different regions of the country. The competitions in Sport SAMBO were held in various age and weight categories.

The athletes of the Grand River South East (GRSE) SAMBO Club dominated the championships. They won 6 gold and 6 silver medals. The championships also involved a family team: Christiano, Andrew, Léo and Léonella Marandelle took first place on the podium in their categories.

Last year brought Mauritius an outstanding achievement: at the African SAMBO Championships in Egypt, Lidesh Jungly won a bronze medal in the 71 kg weight category among men. As noted by the national federation, this success has inspired many athletes who are training with the hope of repeating and improving this result in other international competitions.

This event not only showcased outstanding talent but also reinforced the role of sport in empowering the youth. I am confident that with continued support, Mauritius will achieve greater heights in the continental and global Sambo arena,” said the head of the National SAMBO Lalita Balkissoon.

On behalf of the Mauritius SAMBO Federation, she expressed gratitude to all the participants, coaches and organizers who contributed to the success of this championship.

The organizing committee of the tournament was headed by the national federation instructors Chandraveer Luchmun and Lidesh Jungly. The event was held in collaboration with the Grand River South East Youth Organisation (GRSEYC), which actively uses Sambo as a transformative tool to combat social issues and empower the younger generation.

“The journey to excellence continues and the spirit of SAMBO unites and inspires the youth of Mauritius,” added Lalita Balkissoon.
